A freight cart, also known as a Goods Waggon, is a railroad car used to transport cargo. Early freight cars were mostly made of wood. All-steel cars were introduced around 1896 and had nearly completely replaced the wooden variety within 30 years. Modern freight cars vary greatly in shape and size, but they all evolved from three basic types in use since the early 1800s: the open-top car, the boxcar, and the flatcar.
