OIG exclusion directly affects healthcare providers by precluding them from hiring / contracting with persons /organizations that appear on the OIG's List of Excluded Individuals/Entities (LEIE). In the event a provider hires or compensates an excluded individual or organization for services that are reimbursed under federal healthcare programs such as Medicare / Medicaid without knowledge, they may face harsh penalties, including fines, repayment of funds, and exclusion from the programs themselves. It also presents reputational threats and can harm patient and partner trust. To remain compliant, healthcare organizations need to screen all employees, contractors, and vendors regularly against the OIG exclusion list and take prompt action if a match occurs.
