A robot that moves an autonomous underwater vehicle without the need for human input is known as an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV). AUVs are part of a larger category of underwater vehicles known as unmanned underwater vehicles, which includes non-autonomous remotely operated underwater vehicles (ROVs), which are controlled and powered from the surface by an operator/pilot through an umbilical or via remote control. An AUV is more commonly referred to as an unmanned undersea vehicle in military applications (UUV). AUVs with underwater gliders are a subcategory of AUVs. In the 1970s, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology built several early AUVs. One of them can be seen in MIT's Hart Nautical Gallery. AUVs were also developed in the Soviet Union at the same time (although this was not commonly known until much later).
