How did Hazrat Ali become Caliph?

After the death of the third caliph Usman, the whole nation was frightened. The twelve years of misgovernment shocked them adversely. The whole muslim Ummah wanted to hire such a caliph. Who will think of their interests not his own? Everybody pointed towards Hazrat Ali.
