Jaisalmer, popularly referred to as The Golden City, is perched above a ridge of yellowish sandstone. The town of Jaisalmer, which is topped by the historic Jaisalmer Fort, is surrounded by golden dunes on all sides. In addition to the golden Havelis, the region is home to one of India's oldest and only forts that still has residents living inside its walls. Massive sandstone walls on the Sonar Quila give it a lion-like presence during the day and a lovely honey-gold glow at night.
