Angina pectoris is a medical term that describes the pain or discomfort in the chest caused by coronary heart disease. Angina pectoris develops when the heart muscle does not receive enough oxygen and nutrients. When one or more of the heart's arteries become restricted or blocked, a condition known as ischemia occurs. Angina pectoris is characterized by a painful pressure, fullness, squeezing, or discomfort in the center of the chest. Stable angina pectoris is a risk factor for emotional stress, very hot or cold weather, big meals, and smoking.
