A dreidel is a spinning top with four sides, each with a letter from the Hebrew alphabet. The letters are Nun, Gimel, Hey or Chai, and Shin. Together, they spell out the Hebrew phrase ?Nes Gadol Hayah Sham,? which means ?a great miracle happened there.? This phrase is a reminder of the miracle that Hanukkah celebrates.
