Grammy-winning Anita Pointer of the Pointer Sisters has died at the age of 74

Anita Pointer, a founding member of the pop group covering the genre, died Saturday at the age of 74. Her publicist, Roger Neal, said he had battled cancer for a long time. The Pointer Sisters helped define the sound of the early ?80s with a sultry electronic sound and brassy R&B approach. The group showed their range on such records as the original ?I?m So Excited? and a Bruce Springsteen cover of ?Fire?. Anita Pointer has been integral to the group?s success, writing and performing many of their most famous songs. Her imprint is spread throughout the group?s work: a song on their debut album is named after their daughter, Jada, who died in 2003.
