Glycerol to epichlorohydrin (GTE) plants have been commercialized

Alex00103 Apr, 2023Science

Reminiscent of Berthelot's experiments, glycerol to epichlorohydrin (GTE) plants have been commercialized. The technology takes advantage of the availability of cheap glycerol in biofuel processing. [9] In a process developed by Dow Chemical, two substitution reactions occur when glycerol is treated with hydrogen chloride in the presence of a carboxylic acid catalyst. This is the same intermediate formed in the allyl chloride/hypochlorous acid process, which is then likewise treated with base to form epichlorohydrin.
