Gir National Park, popularly known as Sasan Gir, is a Gujarati wildlife refuge. It is essentially a forest with a total size of 545 square miles, of which 100 square miles is designated as a national park and the remaining 445 square miles is designated as a wildlife sanctuary. The Kathiawar-Gir dry deciduous forest ecosystem includes this wildlife sanctuary. During the nineteenth century, Indian kings used to invite British colonists on hunting excursions for Asiatic lions.
