NFPA 655, the National Fire Protection Association 655, or the Standard for Prevention of Sulfur Fires and Explosions, offers recommendations for the management of those sulfur dust hazards within plant facilities. It sets forth safety requirements for the design, operation, and maintenance of facilities where sulfur is handled to minimize fire and explosion hazards. Some of the key measures are proper ventilation, controlling the dust, preventing explosions and fire protection systems. The standard goes on to address employee training and risk assessment to protect work spaces. Compliance with NFPA 655 by various industries helps to reduce the risks connected with combustible sulfur and therefore protects its workers, equipment, and environment from being exposed to possible threats.
