The francis turbine is an inward radial flow impulse reaction turbine with an axial discharge that was developed by James B. Francis in the mid-1800s. It is basically a reaction turbine that turns water's kinetic energy into mechanical energy, which is then converted into either electrical energy or any required forms. It is often used in hydroelectric power plants to generate electricity.
