FMCSA Eliminates MC Numbers by October 2025: What Carriers Need to Know

The trucking industry is preparing for a major shift. The FMCSA has confirmed that Motor Carrier (MC) numbers will be retired, with the phase-out taking effect on October 1, 2025. After this date, only the USDOT number will remain as the official identifier for motor carriers, brokers, and freight forwarders. According to the study of Freight waves, Over 800,000 motor carriers currently hold MC numbers in the U.S., highlighting the scale of this transition This change is part of FMCSA’s effort to streamline registrations, reduce fraud, and improve compliance under its Unified Registration System (URS). For carriers and logistics providers, the countdown has begun.
