Finger fractures account for about 10% of all broken bones. Surgery may be required for finger fractures that cause severe misalignment. Surgical finger fracture fixation is performed under local anesthesia. During surgery, broken bones are realigned using pins, screws, or wires to secure them in the correct position. A cast or splint is used to ensure the repositioned bones of the finger heal correctly. The cast or splint is usually worn for four to six weeks. The pins, screws, or wires are removed once the finger has healed or may be left in place to ensure that the bones don't shift over time. This procedure is usually performed done on an OP basis. Instruct the patient to keep the hand elevated to reduce pain and swelling. Therapy will be required to strengthen the hand after the fracture is healed, and the splint is removed.
