One way of dealing with negative thoughts is to swap them with positive thoughts. Assume you've recently discovered that you have a health issue. "My life will never be the same again," you may tell yourself, or "This is the beginning of the end for me." That will most likely make you feel awful, and it will weaken your body just when you need something strong. Or you could tell yourself something such as, "This is going to be difficult for a while, but if I'm patient, I can learn and adapt and still live my life" or "This is a challenge for me, but if I give myself time, I can recover.
