As well as being a classic Christmas film, It's a Wonderful Life is regarded as one of the greatest films ever. When George Bailey, played by Jimmy Stewart, finds himself on the verge of suicide due to perceived failures in his life, he is shown an alternate reality of what life would have been like if he had not been born. The film was initially released in 1946 and became a financial disaster. Still, a few years later, a clerical error caused the copyright on the film to be denied renewal, resulting in the film becoming public domain, allowing it to be shown on TV for free for many years to come.
