In January 2025, the FDA announced a ban on the use of FD&C Red No. 3 in food and ingested drugs, effective from January 15, 2027. This decision was based on studies indicating that high levels of Red No. 3 caused cancer in male rats. Although these effects were not observed in humans, the FDA acted under the Delaney Clause, which prohibits additives found to induce cancer in humans or animals. While this ban directly affects human food products, it raises questions about the presence of similar additives in pet foods.​
