Reprogramming of macrophages might be more beneficial in eliciting an effective anti-tumor immune response. The reprogramming of macrophages from an M1-like phenotype to an M2-like phenotype, which significantly inhibits the progression of inflammatory and autoimmune diseases, can be induced by IL-4. While, several approaches, including targeting the Toll-like receptor, RNA delivery and antibodies have been tried to switch M2-like macrophages with pro-tumor properties into anti-tumor M1-like macrophages.
