Southend-on-Sea is an attractive seaside resort in Essex. It is located on the north side of the Thames Estuary. The city has seven miles of beaches. There are also a number of tourist attractions and the longest leisure pier in the world. The city has been a dormitory town for London workers since 1850. Today, the economy is largely based on tourism. In addition to the seaside, there are various cultural and sporting venues. Southend is represented by two Members of Parliament at Westminster. Anna Firth has served as MP for Southend West since 2022. Sir David Amess, the former MP for Southend West, was murdered in 2021. The city has a marine climate, which means summer temperatures are slightly cooler than those in London. Highs range from 22 deg C in winter to 7.8 degC in the summer.
