In 1889, Francesca Cabrini was employed at a small institution in Italy when she approached Pope Leo XIII with her aspirations of serving in China. Instead, the Pope sanctioned her to establish a Catholic Mission in New York City. Despite facing financial constraints and having limited assistance, Cabrini took on the daunting task. She set up her operations in the impoverished Five Points neighborhood of NYC, notorious for its disease, crime, and immoral activities. Collaborating with a disenchanted priest named Fr. Morelli, Cabrini defied the skepticism of Archbishop Corrigan and other prominent figures in the Catholic Church. Alongside her Sisters, she revitalized an orphanage, offering vital aid to underprivileged Italian children through provisions of food, clothing, and education.
