While oil is primarily used to lubricate and cool moving parts of an engine, it also transfers harmful abrasive particles to the sump. these particles must be removed before the oil can circulate around the lubrication system again. An air filter starts to block, the air flow through it becomes restricted, causing the air/fuel ratio to change giving a richer mixture and results in un-burnt fuel leaving the engine as black exhaust smoke.
