Dot cards help young children develop their number sense and early arithmetic abilities, particularly their spatial and nonsymbolic number understanding. Students are able to count the number of dots without counting by quickly identifying spatial patterns of dots, such as those on dice or dominoes. Dot cards are equally simple to produce with the use of enormous index cards and colorful labels. Although Van de Walle recommends using paper plates, I find that index cards or cardstock that have been split in half are simpler to keep and utilize. I punch holes in them and attach them to an O-ring. Create several combinations of each number. The number 3 is displayed on four distinct cards in the image below. Students can better understand how tiny numbers add up to larger numbers by using different colored dots.
