In the past few years, solid-state drives (SSDs) have become standard equipment in ultraportable laptops. Even larger gaming laptops have switched to solid-state discs for their operating systems, while only a minority of low-cost computers still use hard drives (HDDs). These days, even the cheapest prebuilt desktop PCs have SSDs for their boot discs. Sometimes a desktop will include both, with the HDD serving as supplemental storage and the SSD serving as the primary operating system drive.
