Dhanteras, also known as Dhantrayodashi (Hindi: Dhantrayodashi, Gujarati: Dhantrayodashi), is an auspicious Hindu festival that falls on the first day of the major Diwali celebrations. In the Hindu calendar, it occurs on the trayodashi tith of the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight of the moon) during the auspicious month of Kartik, however in the Gregorian calendar, it occurs in the months of mid-October to November. In India, Dhanteras is the first day of Diwali, the festival of lights. Dhanvantari, the Hindu God of Medicine, is honoured on this day. Dhanvantari, an avatar of Lord Vishnu, is the god of Ayurveda who taught mankind the wisdom of Ayurveda. Dhanteras is regarded as one of the most auspicious days of the year, and many people intend to invest in jewellery and household items on this day in the hopes of bringing good fortune and wealth to their homes.
