Calculus is a progressive form of dental plaque which has become hard. Dental plaque is formed if not removed from teeth leads to deposition of mineral salts which further gets hardened by calcium salt deposition. Calculus formation starts with the formation of dental plaque which is formed after the breakdown of food by bacteria, that releases acid which forms a pasty film on the surface of teeth. If dental plaque is not checked by brushing and flossing then it forms calculus. In calculus minerals, salts are deposited over dental plaque due to its sticky nature. Then hardening of inorganic material inside organic matrix forms calculus.
