The capital city of Delhi has a long and diverse history. The first architectural artefacts date to the Maurya Period (about 300 BC), and after that, artefacts from the reign of Emperor Ashoka (273-236 BC) were discovered nearby Srinivaspur. The well-known Iron Pillar was built by the emperor not far from the Qutub Minar. Up to India's independence in 1947, Delhi served as the capital of both the Islamic and British empires. Old Delhi and New Delhi were created as a result of this division. Delhi was chosen to serve as India's capital as well.
