Prominent postmodern philosopher Jacques Derrida introduced the concept of deconstruction as a critical viewpoint on language, meaning, and interpretation. Deconstruction, which first appeared in the second half of the 20th century, questions many of the major tenets of Western philosophy, most notably the notion that meaning can be expressed clearly and completely in words. Postmodernism, which challenges ultimate truths, objective knowledge, and the consistency of meaning, is intimately associated with Derrida's work.
