Paper, polymeric foams, and wood are commonly used as core materials, all of which are very combustible. These core materials are completely encased within the lamination and hence are not exposed to fire directly. A foam will melt and burn when exposed to fire and/or heat, wood will burn and/or char depending on the intensity of the fire, and an aramid will char when exposed to fire and/or heat. Aluminium cores, on the other hand, will initially be unharmed by fire, but will melt at extremely high temperatures, causing the sandwich structure's mechanical qualities to deteriorate over time.
