The Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is a law passed by the Indian Parliament in December 2019. The CAA amends the Citizenship Act of 1955 by providing a path to Indian citizenship for illegal immigrants of six minority religious communities from three neighboring countries. Specifically, the CAA applies to Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan who entered India illegally on or before December 31, 2014. The Act reduces the mandatory residence period for naturalization from 11 years to 5 years for these communities.
