A very common daily habit of cleaning ears with cotton swabs led to a life-threatening infection in the skull of a woman. Using a swab to clean the ear is often harmful as it can push the earwax back into the ear. The American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNSF) states the public to avoid putting things in-ears, including cotton swabs. They may also cause irritation or even injury to the ear, which include punctured eardrum or ear infection.
