The development of electronic funds transfer (EFT) systems in the 1980s, resulted in the introduction of card payment terminals that could execute transactions without requiring a dedicated phone connection. These devices connected to the payment processing system using dial-up modems and were substantially smaller and more portable than the previous generation of card payment equipment. The increasing use of the internet in the 1990s resulted in the creation of card payment devices that could process transactions via the internet. These computers, known as IP terminals, are connected to the online payment system using internet protocols (IP). These devices were even smaller and more compact than the past ones, and they could be readily linked with POS systems
