Can Type 2 Diabetes Evolve into Type 1? Separating Myths from Facts

Pavani13 Jun, 2024Health

While Type 2 diabetes and Type 1 diabetes are both chronic conditions that affect blood sugar regulation, they are fundamentally different diseases. Type 2 diabetes, characterized by insulin resistance, cannot transform into Type 1 diabetes, which is an autoimmune condition that destroys insulin-producing beta cells. However, over time, individuals with Type 2 diabetes may require insulin therapy due to progressive beta-cell dysfunction, a condition sometimes referred to as "insulin-dependent Type 2 diabetes." Misdiagnosis and the presence of hybrid forms like latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA) can also blur the distinctions between the two types, but biologically, Type 2 cannot turn into Type 1.
