During the first two decades of the 21st century, more than 500,000 Americans died from complications related to opioid use disorder. One important aspect of this tragic statistic is that not all opioid crisis deaths are caused by overdosing. Quite a few addicts develop adverse medical conditions as a direct result of their addictions and persistent withdrawal symptoms.
