The prospect of algorithms playing a significant role in decision-making has caused many to worry. This is because algorithms can perpetuate existing human biases and inequalities while appearing to be impartial and unbiased. Human bias has always been a reality, and multiple studies have confirmed that women and minorities experience a 1.5 to 2 times disadvantage in various work processes such as hiring and promotion. Recent legal cases involving prominent companies such as Facebook, Google, and Uber demonstrate the detrimental effects of this bias. Technology itself is neutral, and it can only operate based on what we teach it. It is therefore unsurprising that technology, which is developed and trained by flawed human beings, is complicit in perpetuating our biases.
