Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a condition where the force of blood against the walls of the arteries is consistently too high. Blood pressure is measured in millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and is expressed as two numbers: systolic pressure (the top number) and diastolic pressure (the bottom number). The blood pressure stages based on the level of blood pressure and are classified as follows: Normal: A systolic pressure of less than 120 mmHg and a diastolic pressure of less than 80 mmHg. Elevated: A systolic pressure of 120-129 mmHg and a diastolic pressure of less than 80 mmHg. Stage 1 hypertension: A systolic pressure of 130-139 mmHg or a diastolic pressure of 80-89 mmHg. Stage 2 hypertension: A systolic pressure of 140 mmHg or higher, or a diastolic pressure of 90 mmHg or higher.
