Bittermelon is a herbaceous, tendril bearing vine, with alternate leaves and yellow flowers. The fruit is wartlike exterior and oblong shape. It is also known as karela, balsam pear, bitter apple, bitter squash or bitter gourd, belongs to family Cucurbitacea. This is mostly grown in Asia, Africa etc. for its edible fruit. The fruit contains peptic acid, glucosides, steorites, saponins. It purifies blood and useful in case of diabetes.
