Mild dehydration can be managed with clean water, and your dog will drink on his own most of the time. Acute moderate to severe dehydration, on the other hand, can render your dog incapacitated, and he may be unable to drink on his own. Fluid therapy is usually given slowly, either subcutaneously or intravenously. The most effective way to rehydrate is through an IV. This will have to be done in a clinic with a catheter under strict supervision. Taking in too much fluid too rapidly can have harmful consequences.
