After turmeric and moringa, ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is perhaps the most well-known Ayurvedic herb in the United States. We've previously discussed the benefits of turmeric and moringa for new moms, but Ashwagandha is an Ayurvedic herb that has some incredible fertility and postpartum benefits. Ashwagandha root has been used as a rejuvenative in Ayurveda for hundreds of years and is now recognized as a herbal extract, which means it can help the body resist the stress of all kinds naturally by adapting to the body's needs. The word Ashwagandha literally means "horse smell," but it is more commonly associated with "horse strength" due to its ability to support strength and vitality [1]. Other well-known benefits of Ashwagandha include its ability to promote healthy sleeping patterns[2, 3], reduce stress, and support the immune system[2, 3] as well as healthy reproductive systems in both men and women.
