The Beis HaMikdash, or Holy House, stood as the spiritual and cultural centre of ancient Israel. Built by King Solomon on Mount Moriah, it housed the Ark of the Covenant and featured a vestibule, main hall, and inner sanctum known as the Holy of Holies. Priests tended the menorah, incense altar, and table for sacred bread. The temple was destroyed by the Babylonians, rebuilt as the Second Temple, and later expanded by Herod to include vast courtyards and colonnades.
