After getting images, a doctor can see the shape and size of your pharynx and esophagus and can inform you how you swallow. A swallow test is done to look for diagnosing issues in the throat. However, most people think that it is bitter and chalky. Barium swallow has no side effects, but it can cause constipation and abdominal pain.
