Antibiotics are used in livestock husbandry for a variety of purposes, including therapeutic (treatment when sick), curing a batch of animals when at least one among the group is diagnosed ill (metaphylaxis, which is similar to how bacterial meningitis is managed in children), and prophylaxis (preventative treatment against a number of diseases). The use of sub-therapeutic dosages in water and/or animal feed to improve feed efficiency and growth was completely prohibited from January 1, 2017, according to the new FDA Veterinary Feed Directive. Antimicrobials (including antifungals and antibiotics) and other types of drugs are used by livestock owners and veterinarians in the U.S. for control, treatment, or prevention of livestock diseases.
