Allergy is an exaggerated reaction by the immune system in response to exposure to certain foreign substances. These foreign substances are called as allergens and includes pollens, dust mites, molds, animal proteins, foods, medications, etc. When an allergic individual comes in contact with an allergen, the immune system mounts a response through the IgE antibody. People who are prone to allergies are called as allergic or "atopic." The allergic symptoms may include runny nose, sneezing, blocked sinuses, itching, watery eyes, etc. An allergy diagnostic test may involve either a skin test or a blood test which helps to diagnose particular pollens, molds, or other allergens a particular person is allergic to. Once the allergen is determined, doctors may come up with a plan for avoiding those allergens and can also prescribe medications to ease the symptoms.
