TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, which is the joint connecting the jawbone to the skull. This joint allows the jaw to move up and down, and side to side, allowing for the movement necessary for speaking, chewing, and other functions. TMJ disorder (TMD) is a group of conditions that cause pain and dysfunction in the jaw joint and the muscles that control jaw movement. Symptoms include pain in the jaw, face, neck, shoulders, and around the ear, difficulty opening the mouth, and a clicking or popping sound when opening the mouth.
