One of the most flexible elastic thickeners, it functions best in tiny doses. Xanthan gum can absorb more water than its weight to create a gel and is extremely soluble in both hot and cold water. At low polymer concentrations, xanthan aqueous solutions are viscous. Greater viscosity at low concentrations, insensitivity to temperature, pH, and electrolyte variations, and display of pseudo-plasticity are only a few of its special benefits. A non-hazardous component for a variety of brines, drilling fluids, and fracturing fluids is xanthan gum.
