The surgical removal of the lower two-thirds or nearly the entire esophagus, along with with the uppermost part of the stomach, and the surrounding lymph nodes is known as esophagectomy. The stomach is reshaped into a "new esophagus," brought up into the chest or the neck, and reconnected with the remaining part of the esophagus. This procedure is technically challenging and can result in high mortality and morbidity if performed by a less experienced surgeon.
