The most recent study on the Electronic Nose examined its performance in a patient's breath over time by analysing the level of ambient air. By exposing the e-nose to a polymer with a change in electrical resistance, the e-nose detects airborne volatiles. The resistance is then measured over time as a result of the exposure. This measurement is a raw signal that is then processed to calculate the sample's percent change from the baseline. Other 'omics' platforms, in addition to e-nose research, must be developed.
