5 Lifeboat Inspection Basics

Being on board a large chunk of metal floating in the middle of the ocean, one may be forgiven for being a bit on the careful side. Ensuring the efficiency of life-saving appliances should be one of the top priorities. Lifeboats are the primary life-saving appliances onboard ships. However, according to the United States Coast Guard, as per 2015, lifeboat inspection is one of the top 5 safety deficiencies, along with fire detection equipment, fixed fire lighting equipment, oily water separator and general maintenance. Why is this happening? There are three contributing factors to this dilemma: 1. Maintenance is not done according to schedule. Equipment needs to be regularly checked. Disregarding a schedule can lead to lessened efficiency. 2. Staff required to do maintenance is not sure of what to do.
