Occipital neuralgia is a rare neurological condition that causes severe headaches and shooting, throbbing, burning, or intense pain that typically starts at the base of the skull and radiates along the scalp on one or both sides. This pain follows the path of the occipital nerves, which extend from the spine up through the back of the neck and over the top of the head, sometimes affecting both sides simultaneously.
