304 vs 316 Stainless Steel: What You Need to Know

All types of stainless steels contain iron and chromium in various compositions. Varied levels of the composition creates the different grades of stainless steel. The 304 Grade Stainless Steel comprises of two elements basically, 18% chromium and 8% nickel. There are some other alloys with the same grade, but this is the most popular one. The 316 grade of stainless steel includes less chromium, around 16%, but has increased levels of nickel and molybdenum. 304 stainless steel: 304 grade is the most ordered stainless steel in the world. It provides standard corrosion resistance, formability, strength, and easy maintenance. These are the basic properties for which stainless steel is so well known. They are used in water piping, storage tanks, wheel covers, automotive rim, kitchen equipment and appliances.
