Even though there are several coffee types in today's modern world, the history of coffee cultivation dates back many millennia to the old coffee forests on the Ethiopian plateau. According to folklore, a goat herder Kaldi initially discovered the treasured beans. As word spread more quickly to the east, coffee made its way to the Arabian Peninsula and started a voyage that would eventually take these beans around the world. Later, trade and coffee farming started in the Arabian Peninsula as well. When people began to love coffee's flavour, it was consumed at home and in the numerous public coffee shops that sprang up as the number of coffee houses increased. Knowledge of this "wine of Araby" grew as a result of the tens of thousands of pilgrims from all over the world who visit the holy city of Mecca each year.
